How to Disable Printer Firmware Updates on HP M255dw/M283fdw/M283cdw?
Printer manufacturers periodically release firmware updates that can restrict the use of inexpensive, compatible cartridges. These updates often install automatically without your knowledge. As a result, printing may be interrupted even when the cartridge is fully functional. Disabling automatic updates allows you to maintain full control of your printer and ensures uninterrupted use of compatible cartridges.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to quickly disable automatic firmware updates on your HP M255dw, M283fdw, and M283cdw printers.

For a visual demonstration, we have created a short, no-nonsense video showing every tap on the control panel. You can watch it here:
Feel free to pause, follow along, or share it with a colleague who manages your office printers.
Brief summary:
- On your printer’s home screen, tap or select “Setup” (the gear icon).
- Then scroll to and select “Service”.
- Tap “Laser Jet Update” and choose “Manage updates”.
- You will see “Allow updates” – tap it, then select “No”.
- Go back and select “Prompt before install” – then choose “Always prompt”.
- Finally, select “Check Automatically” and set it to “Off.”
That’s it. Your printer will no longer automatically download or install firmware updates. You will still be able to manually install an update if you ever choose to (though we don’t recommend it unless absolutely necessary).
*Disabling firmware updates will not affect printer functionality.
