Where to Find WPS PIN on HP Printer

If you want to install an HP printer under Windows, you are often asked to enter a WPS PIN. The message usually reads, “Enter the WPS PIN for your printer.” Only after entering this PIN is it possible to connect and operate the new HP printer with a wireless WLAN network. Many HP printers use WPS to connect to wireless devices. This is one of the latest technologies that meet a high-security standard.

What is the WPS PIN for the HP Printer?

The WPS PIN for HP printers consists of 8 digits. This is required so that the HP printer can communicate with the WLAN router. Incidentally, this number is generated by the HP printer itself.

It is not the WLAN password, which can be found on the sticker on the back of the router. The WPS pin code is effectively a secret code between the two WLAN modules. Please note that an input window appears on the screen during the setup process. Unfortunately, you only have up to 90 seconds to enter the WPS PIN. If this time is exceeded, the PIN is invalid.

The HP printer can only generate a new WPS PIN by restarting the PC.

Instructions: Setting up the WPS PIN

Use these steps to generate a WPS PIN for an HP printer and enter it in the setup:

  1. Switch on the HP printer
  2. Press the wireless button on the control panel
  3. The blue wireless LED flashes
  4. Select the “WiFi Protected Setup” option on the display
  5. Select WPS PIN
  6. The WPS PIN is generated
  7. Enter the WPS PIN in the setup program
  8. The WLAN connection is set up

Where Can I Find the WPS PIN?

During the setup process, the WPS PIN is shown on the display of the HP printer’s control panel. This is the case, for example, with the HP Envy 4520, HP OfficeJet 4650, or HP LaserJet series printers with display. However, there are also devices, such as the HP DeskJet 2600 or the HP DeskJet 2652, which do not have a display. Instead, these printers are equipped with a WPS button. The printer manual explains where the WPS button is located.

Connecting the HP Printer to the WLAN Using the WPS Button

After restarting the HP printer, you have to press and hold the WPS button for a few seconds. The WLAN LED starts to light up. Now you have little time and must go to the WLAN router. There should also be a WPS button on the router. Again, press and hold this button for a few seconds until the LED flashes. Both WLAN devices will now try to establish a connection. When the LEDs on the printer and router stop flashing, the setup is complete.

Conclusion: WPS PIN for a Secure WLAN Connection

HP printers offer the option of generating a secure WPS PIN during the initial installation and setup. This PIN is independent of the WiFi network key. This ensures that the HP printer operates securely in the network and prevents unauthorized persons from accessing the device. If necessary, the HP printer can also be connected to the WLAN router using the WPS button instead of a WPS PIN.
